About the Department

The Department of Geology was established in the year 2018 with an aim to offer Geology as one of the subject in undergraduate courses for the Girls students of south Kashmir. It is one of the youngest departments of the college. Initially the Department of Geology was functioning in the main college building (Administrative Block). Later on, the Department was shifted to newly constructed Science Block on 01 September, 2020. Dr Hamidullah Wani was the first Head of the Department. Today it is one of the leading Geology departments of the Higher Education with excellent teaching and learning environment and well-equipped contemporary laboratories facilities. The Department of Geology is a vibrant community of teachers and students, passionate about the Earth sciences. Faculty members of the department have published their research work in reputed National and International journals with high impact factor like, Tectonophysics, Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, Geological survey of India, Bulletin of Indian Geologist Association, Journal of Indian Geological Congress and Turkish online journal of Qualitative Inquiry, Journal of Applied Geochemistry and Earth Sciences India with research interests spanning the full spectrum of geological disciplines. Research specializations of the department include Geochemistry, sedimentology and paleoclimatology, Quaternary climate change.

The Department of Geology is committed to advancing the understanding of the Earth’s physical structure, composition and processes through exceptional teaching and community engagement. We strive to produce geoscientists who are equipped to address the complex challenges facing our planet from natural hazards to sustainable resource management. The Department of Geology aims to provide trained manpower to the mineral based industries, the mining sector in the state and the different central organizations and to prepare them for other professional positions in public and government sectors. The Department envisions attaining excellence in teaching and research and making the Department a sought-after destination for students not only in the state but also in the country and abroad.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Geology is to provide high quality education to its students so as to enable them to grow and prosper to their optimum potential. It endeavors to impart quality education through classroom teaching reinforced by hands-on experience in the field, so that the students are able to gain knowledge in various functional areas.

COURSE OFFERED

Initially the department offered Geology as one of the four subjects in science stream for B.Sc degree. Under NEP 2020, the department now offers Geology as Minor Subject up to 3rd semester. In 4th semester, student can chose geology as major subject. The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Earth sciences and practical skills in fieldwork, laboratory techniques and data analysis. Our curriculum is regularly updated to reflect the latest advances in the field and to address the needs of industry and society.

2. Dr Khalid Mahmood Mir (Guest Faculty)

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

Over the past 6 years, the department has been benefitted from the assistance from the Higher Education department, Government of J & K. This has led to the expansion of the department’s infrastructure and has thus enhanced capacity for effective teaching and research. Department faculty is making every possible effort to expand the infrastructure of the department. The department is presently operating in 3 storied Science Block (common building sharing with other science departments) comprising of one lecture theater, one Laboratory cum museum, and staff room with washroom facilities for staff. The department is equipped with all modern up to-date facilities required to take theory and practical classes. The main facilities/equipments of the department are as mentioned below:

STUDENT PROGRESSION

Student placements: Students of the department after completing their masters are able to qualify various competitive examinations of various important organizations like the PSC, UPSC, Department of Geology and Mining, Power Development Corporation, Rail and road ways construction companies, central groundwater, ONGC, GSI etc. Most of the students also working in different gulf countries and earning their name and fame. After completing their masters they can also go for their Ph.D courses in various universities of the country and abroad and can serve in various prestigious institutions of country and abroad.
