Govt. Degree College for Women Pulwama was established in 2008 and the Department of Botany got its inception in the year 2016. The department is housed in the first floor of main building of college. The department has one spacious staff room, one laboratory, one lab assistant room and a store room. The main goal of the department at present is to impart quality education to students at undergraduate level and to make them aware about the cutting edge research going on in the field of botanical sciences. The Department undertakes the teaching of Undergraduate students under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) system, in accordance with the syllabus laid down by the University of Kashmir. The students are encouraged to participate in events as plantation drives, flower shows, botanical collection trips and preparation of herbaria etc. so that they remain well versed with nature. The department will start skill enhancement courses like horticulture, medicinal botany, ethanobotany etc. in the near future. The main aim of introduction of these courses is to produce skilled and entrepreneur youth, so that in future they will become employers and not only employees. The students are also being informed about the present status of the biodiversity of world in general and Jammu and Kashmir in particular and the different methods for its conservation.
